Penn Community Schools Celebrate Community at Harambee Day – Malcolm X Park, August 13th
Over 400 students from four of Penn’s seven University Assisted Community School Programs will come together on August 13th at Malcolm X Park (52nd and Pine Streets) to celebrate community and to participate in group Harambee competitions—a series of chants, cheers, song and dance.
Students from the Lea, Huey, Comegys, and Wilson Elementary Schools will arrive at Malcolm X Park at 10AM and rotate through over 20 fun activities during the day. The event will climax at 1:30PM when the different community schools participate in Harambee—Swahili for “let’s bring it together.” Harambee will include Read Aloud from a special guest, Chants and Cheers, the Recognitions, and the Theme Song. There will also be a Harambee competition between the sites.
“This will be an exciting day for all the students, especially when all the sites get together for Harambee,” Chris Bower, program director for Penn Community Schools, said.
Sheila Mallory, the Assistant Principal at Huey Elementary School and the director of the Community School programs at Huey, is extremely excited about the event. “Over the last two years, Penn’s community school programs have provided our students with after school programs, school day tutoring, and countless enrichment opportunities. Harambee Day will embody all of that work. And it will be great to see Huey win the Harambee Trophy!”
Penn’s University-Assisted Community Schools Program helps to transform schools into centers of education, services, and community engagement. Penn staff coordinate various university resources such as ABCS courses and tutoring programs during the school day and operate the school during out-of-school time with after school, evening, and summer programs for youth and their families.
