Department Colloquium: Teaching Good Citizenship in Higher Ed – Oct 29

Posted by Penn Arts and Sciences on October 27, 2026

How do you teach a student to excel, not as a professional or as an intellectual, but as a member of a society? Cicero, Plato, Aristotle, Isocrates, and other ancient thinkers all had their views. It’s a question that many Americans have taken up as well, from Thomas Jefferson to John Dewey and bell hooks. This intellectual tradition can help each of us find meaning and purpose today in the field of education.

Joanna Kenty, who earned her Ph.D. in Classical Studies from Penn in 2014, will speak about the different ways in which we can relate our work to the civic mission(s) of higher education, offering an overview of the field of civic engagement in higher ed today.

Date and Time: October 29, 2026, –
