WEDNESDAY JULY 22 – Herbal Tinctures from the Garden

6pm @ Preston’s Paradise, 839 N. Preston St.
Join Joy Payton and learn how to harvest the beneficial nutrients and healing properties of herbs and tincture them to keep yourself healthy all year round. Learn easy and effective ways to preserve herbs year-round for medicinal use.

SATURDAY JULY 25 – Composting FAQ
11am  @ the Mill Creek Farm, 4901 Brown St.
Nature has been composting since the beginning of the earth. All organic matter eventually breaks down. Composting in your backyard uses the same principles that nature uses – we just try to speed it up by creating an environment that supports microbial activity. Come learn how to use a recipe of your own kitchen scraps and yard waste to create healthy, nutrient rich soil. This workshop led by Christine Tilles from Penn State Agricultural Extension is a hands-on workshop so be prepared to get your hands dirty.
Donations are encouraged but not required.

SUNDAY JULY 26 – How to organize in the Face of a Food Crisis: Lessons Learned from Cuba: 4-6pm: @ LAVA space: 4134 Lancaster Ave.
Presentation and slideshow by Colectivo Cosecha Solidaria/ Solidarious Harvest Collective- a group of women who traveled to Cuba for 3 weeks to learn about transformation towards a smaller scale, organic, and local model of agriculture. This is a participatory workshop, where we ask audience members to think critically and strategize about how we would organize in the face of a food crisis. All ages welcome!  FREE!

SATURDAY AUGUST 1 – Herbal Medicine in the Garden
11am  @ the Mill Creek Farm, 4901 Brown St.
This event will feature a tour through the farm with Dr. Stephanie Georgieff, a practicing Naturopath and Acupuncturist for over 20 years, visiting from California! Herbal Medicine in the Garden will inspire a deep appreciation of how fresh vegetables and herbs can improve your health, and will be followed by summer cooking demonstration, and tastings of the Mill Creek Farm Summer Bounty. Suggested donation: Adults $15.00, Children under 12,  $ 7.00

SUNDAY AUGUST 2 – Introduction to Permaculture
10am  @ Preston’s Paradise, 839 N. Preston St.
Join us for this introductory workshop on urban Permaculture, led by Phil Forsythof the Philadelphia Orchard Project (http://www.phillyorchards.org) and Forsyth Garden (http://www.forsythgardens.com). Permaculture principles guide participants in observing and re-creating patterns in the natural worldfor the production of food and preservation of ecosystems.  A perfect skill for urban living and growing food in small spaces.This workshop will introduce Permaculture to participants and assist them in re-shaping the landscape to benefit health and the environment.  Registration required by emailing info@prestonsparadise.org.  Suggested donation $5-10.

SATUDAY AUGUST 15 – Cob Oven construction
11am @ the Mill Creek Farm, 4901 Brown St.
Made out of an adobe mixture of clay-soil, sand and straw; earthen ovens are simple, low-cost and fun to build. Ideal for baking bread and pizza, earthen ovens are beautiful as well as functional. This workshop will cover Earth Oven construction from start to finish. Participants will learn basic oven building methods and techniques including: how to gather raw materials, build foundations and apply finish plasters. The workshop will also cover how to heat and bake with a wood-fired, earthen oven. The goal to the workshop is not only to demonstrate how to build an oven but how to work with earth as a building material, giving participants the skills to build their own Earth Oven.
