Job Description

Job Title: Peace Education Fellowship
Supervisor: Coordinator, Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Program
Location: National Office, Philadelphia, PA
Background: The Peace Education Fellowship is sponsored by the Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Program of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC).

The Fellowship has just been developed to provide a unique opportunity for individuals who have some experience working for social change to further enhance those skills by working on a national level. The Fellowship is an embodiment of the popular education concept of "youth teaching youth," in the sense that it will create the space for skills training on peacebuilding work for youth conducted by youth.

The AFSC Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Program/Network is one of five programs of the AFSC Peace Building Unit (PBU) and works to address the causes, impact of and alternatives to war and militarization in societies, both within the US and internationally. The Fellow is part of a team, which provides overall program coordination and administration of the Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Program/Network.

Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Program staff develop peace education curricula, conduct trainings and workshops; develop resource materials on peacebuilding issues and concerns, do media outreach and communications work, engage in coalition building and support grassroots awareness-raising and organizing efforts with aim of (1) understanding the root causes of war and violence; (2) exploring peaceful alternative to war and violence; (3) building awareness on immediate peacebuilding issues and concerns such as: nuclear weapons and missile defense system, small arms proliferation; socio-economic, political and environmental impacts of military bases, etc.; overall effect of military spending on national budgets and its social consequences; the use of economic sanctions as weapon of war; the role of defense corporations and the military-industrial complex on the lives of people both inside and outside the U.S. (4) strengthening youth involvement in peace-building work; (5) supporting and building a new peace movement in response to the widening war proposed by the U.S. government.

The Peacebuilding and Demilitarization Program/Network serves as a resource and coordination center on these issues and works collaboratively with AFSC domestic, international and local programs.

The Fellowship is supervised by the Coordinator of the program. The Fellow functions as a regular staff member of the program, participating in staff and committee meetings and providing support to the overall work of the program. The position is based in AFSC’s National Office in Philadelphia.

Compensation: The stipend is approximately $16,500 (for 11 months). Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.
