Widener conference focuses on grandparent caregivers
According to the 2000 US Census, in Pennsylvania there are 205,000 grandparents raising their grandchildren full time with 10,000 residing in Delaware County. On Wednesday, May 9, 2007, a conference for grandparents raising their grandchildren and professionals who work with these families will be held at Widener University, in Chester, from 8:30 AM until 3:00 PM. The conference, entitled ?The Multigenerational Dynamics of Grandparent Caregiving? will feature Nancy Hooyman, Ph.D. and will explore the complexities that arise when grandparents become the primary caregivers for their grandchildren thereby creating a new ?multigenerational dynamic? in their families.
Dr. Hooyman is a Professor in Gerontology and Dean Emeritus at the University of Washington, School of Social Work.
Representatives from various community agencies will be present to inform participants about the resources available to them. The conference is supported by Delaware County Office of Services for the Aging (COSA), Family and Community Service of Delaware County, and Widener University, Center for Social Work Education. The fee for the conference is $75.00 for professionals, $20.00 for students and $5.00 for grandparent caregivers. The fee includes continental breakfast, lunch, continuing education credits for psychologists and social workers (6 CEUs), and Foster Care education credits. Second Time Around Parents is a program developed by Family and Community Service of Delaware County that has been working with grandparent caregivers for over 16 years.
