Achieving Independence Center Open House
Posted by on August 05, 2010
Greetings from the Achieving Independence Center (AIC)!
We are dedicated to giving support and real life tools for youth who want to make a true investment in their future. The AIC strives to help our members reach self-sufficiency by offering an array of programs such as: education counseling, job readiness training, courses on technology, housing, life skills, healthy relationships, plus a dynamic mentoring program sponsored by PathWaysPA. A project of the Philadelphia Department of Human Services (DHS), the AIC provides high valued programs and the necessary services to youth who are aging-out of the foster care system.
At the AIC we know the importance of investing in a young life. Mentors serve as positive role models and friends to others. They have the ability to listen, show empathy, and be committed to another person who needs them. Can you imagine how difficult it can be growing up without permanent housing and no one to guide you through life? Nearly 20,000 youth enter the foster care system each year and are far too familiar with this feeling. Many of these youth heartily want a positive role model and guide in their life; but sadly the number of youth in need usually outweighs the number of committed mentors available. Consider these startling truths: over 1/5 of all foster youth will become homeless at some point after turning 18 and only 58% earn high school diplomas compared to 87% of the national comparison group of non-foster youth! Mentoring youth in foster care can combat these statistics by making a positive difference in youth behavior and development.
With this being said, the AIC Mentoring Program is giving you the chance to be a change in a young person’s life! In honor of National Foster Care Month, we would like to invite you to our Mentoring Open House held on Monday, August 16, 2010 from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Please feel free to drop-in for (1) hour to receive more information on how your company/organization can volunteer; plus be entered to win FREE TICKETS to The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre!
We thank you in advance for your time and consideration to this very pertinent cause. For more information and to RSVP to the Open House please contact me by phone or e-mail at 215-574-9194 ext. 234 or nrinaldo@aicenter.us. Thank you again.
