What’s Up in Philadelphia? July 1st-15th

And The Winner Is…
Dr. William Hite will be the superintendent for the School District of Philadelphia. The other contender, Pedro Martinez was offered and accepted a job in Washoe County, Nevada at the end of last week. Hite has experience as a superintendent, principal and teacher and it seems he was the default winner with many philadelphians showing support because of his education background. I think he will face difficulty dealing with the skeptical Philadelphia community, but I hope he does his job well. More information here.
July Weekends in Philadelphia
Sunday July 1, I went to the Super Scooper All-You-Can-Eat Ice Cream Festival on Penn’s Landing and it was a lot of fun! The event was held as a benefit for the Joshua Kahan Fund set up to help fight pediatric cancer. It cost $7 to enter, as a donation to the charity, but it was so worth it. I went with two of my housemates, and even though we had to walk 20 minutes to get to the train into Philadelphia, trying our best not to have the heat get the better of us, it was so worth it. There was Ben and Jerry’s, Bassett’s, Edy’s, Turkey Hill, various types of water ice, Hagan Daaz, and much more to choose from. The event was held in a tent near Penn’s Landing. There were all sorts of people in attendance; families, young couples, high school students, and people just wanting some good ice cream on a hot summer’s day. Definitely keep an eye out for this event if you are in Philadelphia next summer, If you like ice cream, you won’t regret it.
This past weekend I was cooped up in my room, staying away from the high temperatures and glaring bright sun, choosing to stay hydrated and sunburn free in the safety of my own home.
