Volunteer Position: Coordinator for Mentor Program at Parkway NW High School for Peace & Social Justice

The mentor program was started a few years ago by concerned individuals who wanted to ensure that students had the opportunity to have a positive role model outside of their family unit. We hope to continue this program at Parkway but desperately need a dedicated volunteer to commit and help ensure a successful mentor program.

Time commitment: 8 hours a week (roughly)

Job description:
•    (ongoing)Contact possible mentors and mentees and organize an information session to discuss:
o    what it means to be a mentor
o    hours and other commitments
o    complete pertinent paperwork
•    Organize a meeting with old mentors and mentees
o    Learn about what worked for pairs last year
o    Discern what activities and processes should be continued during this school term
•    Interview new mentors and mentees to make pairs; make sure old pairs are sufficient
•    Every two weeks touch base with pairs
o    Make sure pairs are compatible
o    Make sure pairs are talking at least once a week and meeting once a month
•    Help each pair choose an organization in which to volunteer once a month (see Volunteer Service-Learning Guidebook in Student Community Development Office at Parkway NW for various organizations), preferably related to peace and social justice.
•    If time, organize activities in Philadelphia for pairs to participate in (Mural paintings, museum trips, etc)

Most work can be done independently but coordinator will have to make trips to Parkway for information sessions and other meetings.

Please note that the coordinator will have help from Sarah Derbew in the SCDC office and Claudette Levitt at Parkway NW. Contact Sarah Derbew if interested in position at parkwayforpeace@gmail.com.
