Virtual Learning Session 3: Teaching and talking about race – Aug 4

GivePulse is committed to facilitating conversations that contribute to implementing socially just, antiracist, impactful community engagement. Join our summer virtual learning circle sessions designed to share concrete strategies for countering the role of service learning in perpetuating white privilege and racism based on “Service Learning as a Pedagogy of Whiteness” by Tania D. Mitchell, David M. Donahue and Courtney Young-Law.

Date and Time: August 4, 2022, 2:00 PM

All are welcome whether you were able to attend the previous learning circle. The primary focus of the article is on community engagement course construction and execution, but we hope that community partners, students, and community engagement staff and faculty will participate in contributing experiences and insights from differing perspectives. Similarly, people of all races are welcome, but we wish to acknowledge that white people are responsible for learning to recognize and counter white privilege, white supremacy and racism.

Participants are asked to do the following before the learning circle session to facilitate dialogue:

• Review the article with attention to pp. 621-623 and 625-626. To access the article, scroll down to the listing for the article, “Service Learning as a Pedagogy of Whiteness.” Then, click on the “[PDF] ihmc.us” link to the right of the title to open the article.
• Review the Service Learning as a Pedagogy of Whiteness Reflection/Discussion Guide. Then, spend some time thinking/journaling on the reflection/planning questions for the two sections of the article to be discussed.
• If you missed the first session, check out the Jamboard we created with resources, notes and strategies.
