About Temple Teacher Residency
The Temple Teacher Residency is an innovative urban STEM teacher education program that provides simultaneous school-based teaching experience and graduate education to individuals with strong science, mathematics, and/or engineering backgrounds who are committed to becoming science and/or mathematics teachers in Philadelphia’s high-need middle schools. Through this intensive, accelerated 1-year master’s program, teacher residents are supported by a generous one-year living stipend while they collaboratively teach with an experienced mentor for a full academic year in a middle school classroom in an urban, public or charter school, and engage in graduate studies leading to:
- Masters of Education from Temple University’s College of Education
- Pennsylvania teaching certification for middle grades (grades 4-8) science and/or mathematics
- Pennsylvania teaching certification for grades 4-6 in science, mathematics, language arts, and social studies
- Pennsylvania certification in special education
TTR provides ongoing professional development to all teacher residents, including:
- Initial free week-long summer institute to prepare residents to enter the classroom
- Two additional years of mentorship following graduation when residents become Philadelphia middle grades teachers
