Teaching Democracy By Doing: Faculty In Nonpartisan Student Engagement

In a time of civic disengagement and political polarization, university campuses provide hope for democratic renewal. Faculty are often viewed primarily as instructors who deliver knowledge solely in the classroom. However, faculty influence can extend beyond the lecture hall when we step into the role of civic facilitators.
As civic facilitators, we can help students develop the various skills that democratic participation requires; such as habits, confidence, and curiosity. At a time when many students feel disillusioned or excluded from political systems, especially those from marginalized communities, civic engagement work on campus helps foster a sense of agency, belonging, and purpose. It affirms to students that their voices matter every day, not just on Election Day.
