Seventh Annual Fighting Words Poetry Contest – May 12

Posted by Pulitzer Center on March 12, 2024

Every year the Pulitzer Center hosts contests for K-12 students that encourage them to explore and empathize with stories from around the world, utilize their voices to take action on global issues that matter most to them, and inspire others to do the same.

We are excited to announce the launch of our spring writing opportunity for students: the Fighting Words Poetry Contest! Now in its seventh year, this contest invites K-12 students worldwide to respond to global issues by writing original poems that include lines from a Pulitzer Center news story. Winning entries will be awarded cash prizes and will be published on the Pulitzer Center website.

Visit the contest portal to view all contest guidelines, plus robust resources for educators and students, including graphic organizers and workshop presentations. Visit our new Suggested Stories tab to find curated news stories organized by grade level and the Pulitzer Center’s five focus issues: Climate and Environment, Global Health, Human Rights, Peace and Conflict, and Information and Artificial Intelligence.

All entries to the contest are due Sunday, May 12, 2024, by 11:59pm EDT.

If you have any questions about the contest after exploring the contest portal, simply reply to this email or reach out to us any time at [email protected].
