History Channel to Award Grants to Historical Organizations for School Projects
Deadline: December 3, 2004

The History Channel has announced the first year of its Save Our History National Grant Program. The program will award $250,000 in grants to historical organizations that partner with educators on unique, rewarding projects that help students learn about and appreciate the history of their local communities.

Historical societies, preservation organizations, museums, historic sites, and other history organizations that partner with schools on Save Our History projects can apply for Save Our History grants. The History Channel will award grants between $1,000 and $10,000.

To be eligible for this program, historical organizations must work with partner educators who utilize the Save Our History Educator’s Manual. Projects must focus on a significant aspect of community history. For example, projects might focus on the history and/or preservation of a building, historic site, historic collections, or an historic event that is important to the local community. The project could include oral histories, primary research, historical documentation, archaeological, or architectural studies, exhibits, etc. Projects must raise awareness among students and community members about the significance of their local heritage and the importance of historic preservation. Projects must include a permanent resource to be shared with students and community members. Permanent resources can include oral histories, exhibits, a notebook or research documentation, photo or video documentaries, etc.

Grant applications will be available and can be submitted online at the Save Our History Web site.
