Bread & Roses Offers Grants from Racial and Economic Justice Fund

The January 6th attack on the US Capitol was a deeply disturbing threat to our democracy and a brazen display of white supremacy. These voices are growing louder, more prominent, and more violent. At the same time, COVID-19 continues to rage disproportionately through Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color. The pandemic lays bare the health, housing, and employment inequities that stem from systemic oppression.

As winter makes the challenges of living in a pandemic even harder, we look for reasons to be hopeful. The new administration has pledged to fight white supremacy and has called for racial justice. It includes the first woman, Black person, and Asian American elected to the office of vice president. They’ve already rolled back some of the most racist, anti-immigrant, and anti-LGBTQ policies of the previous administration. And they’re using science to address the pandemic and climate crisis.

But we all know that there are many battles ahead in the struggle for equity and justice. What really brings me hope is knowing that across the Philadelphia region, communities are rising to meet this moment. They are organizing to secure equity and justice, and ramping up the pressure to hold elected officials accountable. We are here to support these community organizers. Bread & Roses Community Fund(link is external) is now accepting applications(link is external) for one of our core funds, the Racial & Economic Justice Fund(link is external).

The Racial & Economic Justice Fund makes $10,000 grants to groups using community organizing to promote racial and economic justice. Groups applying to this fund must be using community organizing to create systemic change, and must center racial and economic justice in their understanding of the issues they work to address.

March 8 is the deadline to apply for a grant from the Racial & Economic Justice Fund.
