HIAS Pennsylvania was founded in 1882 to provide services to Jewish immigrants and refugees fleeing persecution and seeking opportunity by migration to America. Based on the tradition of “welcoming the stranger,” HIAS Pennsylvania works to resettle, reunite and represent Jewish and all immigrants and refugees of limited means residing in Pennsylvania and the Delaware Valley. The agency seeks the fair treatment and integration into American society of immigrants from all backgrounds.

HIAS Pennsylvania provides the following programs:
• Representation and legal counseling before immigration agencies and the courts
• Resettlement and other support services to assist refugees, immigrants and those granted asylum
• Citizenship services

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Development and Communications Director
Supervisor: Judith Bernstein-Baker
Category: Exempt Position, Professional, FTE or .8 FTE

Responsibilities:
• Working with the Development Committee of the Board and the Executive Director, lead the process of creating a Development Plan that is consistent with HIAS Pennsylvania’s Strategic Plan
• With the Executive Director, develop and support the Board of Directors by coordinating meetings and committee work related to development.
• Direct the Annual Fundraising Event and any additional events called for in the Development Plan
• Cultivate and nurture relationships with current and potential individual, corporate and foundation donors
• Increase major and legacy gifts
• Train and support Board members and staff to increase their involvement in development activities
• With the management team, assist with grant proposals and reports to corporate, foundation, and government funders
• Develop and implement marketing, communications and public relations strategies required for implementing the Development Plan and the Annual Fundraising Event
o Update website (in development) and oversee its maintenance
o Develop written flyers and newsletters, including E-newsletters
o Assist in writing Annual Report
o Manage media coverage of programs, events, projects and announcements
• Maintain and update fundraising database and mailing lists
Qualifications:
• B.A. degree
• At least 3 years of nonprofit fundraising/development or comparable experience, including foundation, corporate and high net-worth donors
• Proven track record achieving revenue targets
• Proven management and leadership capabilities
• Ability to work well with diverse staff, Board and stakeholders
• Strong verbal communications skills and ability to write clearly and persuasively
• Strong event planning skills
• Good computer skills, data base management and proficient in major development software
• Excellent time management and organizational skills

Work Environment:/Context
HIAS Pennsylvania’s annual budget is $1.4 million dollars. It has a diverse funding base composed of nominal fees, private donor contributions, government funds, and private foundation awards. As a refugee resettlement agency, we also distribute direct and indirect assistance to refugees. We currently have 16 staff members, most of whom are professionals. We partner with the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and United Way of Southeast Pennsylvania.
