Call for 2026 Cycle Tier One Reviewers: Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement – Dec 1
Posted by American Council on Education on November 19, 2024
The Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement is sought by campuses on a voluntary basis. The classification is designed to gather information about how institutions are aligning their institutional infrastructure to enable and facilitate community-engaged work across the institution and how they are gathering information and assessing the quality and outcomes from this work. This involves data collection and documentation of important aspects of institutional mission, identity, and commitments, and requires substantial effort invested by participating institutions. The classification acts as a benchmarking tool for institutions to evaluate various aspects of their processes in relation to best practice standards; it is not a tool that creates a hierarchy or levels of classification.
The foundation of the evaluation and assessment of the applications for the classification is the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s definition of community engagement.
Starting in the 2024 cycle, we piloted a peer review process for the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement and will continue to offer this in the 2026 cycle. The goal of having a peer review process is to make the elective classification of and by the field and increase the diversity of reviewers who both understand and represent the broader landscape of higher education institutions and community engagement.
