Adult Literacy Tutor Training Facilitator Scope of Work
DESCRIPTION
Provide training facilitation for the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy’s online and/or blended Basic, ESL and/or GED® tutor training programs.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
The trainer receives general direction and supervision from the Mayor’s Commission Volunteer Program Manager and the Commission’s Senior Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Essential functions and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
• Providing volunteer tutors with strategies and resources to use when working with adult learners who are enrolled in basic literacy programs, are preparing to pass the GED® exam and/or are working on improving their English language skills
• Facilitating face-to-face training sessions
• Facilitating and monitoring online training by monitoring trainees’ enrollment in and completion of the online tutor training, including:
1. Posting several encouraging announcements, at least once a week
2. Reviewing and responding to the trainees’ posts and submissions a minimum of four times week
3. Stimulating discussions to maintain trainees’ engagement
4. Responding to trainees’ online posts no more than 24 hours of their posting/submission
5. Contacting trainees who are falling behind in the course electronically and/or by phone
• Submitting training reports that summarize the number of attendees, activities undertaken during the face-to-face and online training, and provide recommendations
Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
• Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree preferred in education, social science or a closely related field
• Knowledge of and experience working with adult education or with the learner population for adult literacy
• Understanding of adult learning principles and their implementation in adult basic and literacy education
• Experience teaching and/or tutoring both in face-to-face and online settings
• Experience teaching adult basic education (ABE) courses, ESL and/or GED® prep courses
• Very comfortable with new technologies and how they can be integrated in learning
• Ability to motivate learners
• Ability and willingness to facilitate as needed tutor training sessions in different city neighborhoods
