2018 Summer Math and Science Honors Academy for 9th graders

Posted by Level Playing Field Institute on March 5, 2018

SMASH is a free of cost, residential college prep program for underrepresented, low income students who are interested in learning more about STEM. SMASH has been around for about 15 years, based primarily on the West Coast until expanding to Atlanta last year. This year, we’ll launch our first site in Philadelphia hosted by UPenn’s Wharton School. Throughout the summer, scholars will have the chance to dive deeply into math, science, computer science, as well as entrepreneurship courses designed by Wharton faculty. Scholars will also be introduced to STEM professionals in our city during our weekly Networking Nights and Speaker Series. After summer is finished, scholars receive year round support through our Saturday Academy where we reinforce summer learning and provide additional college prep support and resources.

The SMASH application is now open and the deadline is Monday, March 12th to at least be registered in the system. Scholars will be required to provide the following:

-Scholar information including: current GPA, 8th grade GPA/8th grade transcript, and most recent standardized math scores

-Family information including parent/guardian income and employment information

-Two letters of recommendation from a Math and Science teacher

-An essay of at least 500 words using the prompt: Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve in your community. It can be anything of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution using science, technology, engineering, and/or math.

Given how extensive the application is, it would be best to have interested students begin as soon as possible.
