Alexia Foundation Issues Call for Applications for 2018 Grants Program

The Alexia Foundation has issued a Call for Applications for its 2018 grants program.

The program awards grants to student and professional visual journalists to help them produce projects that inspire change by addressing topics of social significance.

The foundation created its Grants Program nearly thirty years ago to support still photographers. It recognizes that the profession more and more calls for a diverse range of story forms. Therefore, while submissions must include a set of still photographs, they should also include other story forms (e.g., audio, video, VR, or any other visual format).

1) Professional Alexia Grant: The foundation will award grants of $20,000 to enable professional photographers and visual journalists to produce bodies of work that share its goals of promoting world peace and cultural understanding. Priority is given to work that helps bring about change. The application deadline is February 1, 2018.

2) Student Alexia Grant: The foundation will award grants to current college student photographers to help them produce bodies of work that share its goals of promoting world peace and cultural understanding. Priority is given to work that helps bring about change. Student applicants are encouraged to consider proposing projects close to where they are located. Deadline for submission is March 1, 2018.

The primary student grant (first place) will be awarded to one person. Judges may also award up to four awards of excellence. Grants will be given to both undergraduate and graduate students.

The First Place award for undergraduates includes tuition for a semester at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications (valued at $21,000); a $1,000 cash grant to help produce the proposed body of work; and $500 for the student’s academic department. Award(s) of Excellence include $1,500 to be applied to tuition at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, upon acceptance; or tuition to attend a MediaStorm One-Day Masterclass, a Momenta Photo Workshop, or the Kalish Workshop; and a $500 cash grant to help produce the proposed project.

The First Place award for graduate students include tuition for three graduate-level classes and program fees during the fall semester at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, up to a maximum of $15,000; a $1,000 cash grant to help produce the proposed project; and $500 for the student’s academic department. Award(s) of Excellence include $1,500 to be applied toward tuition at Syracuse University or tuition to attend a MediaStorm One-Day Masterclass, a Momenta Photo Workshop, or the Kalish Workshop; and a $500 cash grant to help produce the proposed project.

Winners will be announced early April 2018. Judging takes place at Syracuse University March 23 and 24 at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. The public is invited to attend.

The foundation will begin accepting applications on January 7, 2018. Applications must be received no later than February 1, 2018. Professionals will be prompted to pay a $50 application fee; there is no entry fee for students.
