Webinar: Lessons from the Field: Integrating and Elevating the Humanities in General Education – Oct 1

Posted by American Association of Colleges and Universities on September 23, 2025

Recognizing that the humanities are essential to the health of American civic life and that the future vitality of the humanities will depend largely on what happens in general education, the Teagle Foundation launched the Cornerstone: Learning for Living initiative. Cornerstone grounds students in gateway humanities courses built around transformative texts and coherent curricular pathways, helping them develop critical skills, foster community, and find deeper meaning across their studies. It also supports faculty-led efforts to make the humanities central and relevant to all students, including those in pre-professional and STEM fields.

This free webinar will explore how the initiative is playing out at four very different institutions: Augustana College, California Polytechnic State University, Stanford University, and Victoria College. Panelists will share how their implementation of the Cornerstone model and their use of “transformative texts” as a pedagogical and curricular innovation is engaging students in humanistic thought and inquiry—and revitalizing the role of the humanities in general education. The panelists will also participate in a candid discussion of lessons learned from overcoming implementation challenges, involving faculty in the initiative, and assessing student outcomes.

The webinar will conclude with guidance from Teagle for those interested in applying for the next round of grant funding to participate in the Cornerstone initiative.
