Barbara McDowell and Gerald S. Hartman Foundation invites applications for social justice litigation grants
The Barbara McDowell and Gerald S. Hartman Foundation aims to improve the economic well-being, social conditions, and civil liberties of disadvantaged persons and groups in the United States.
The foundation works to advance its mission by making grants to organizations that undertake systemic social justice litigation across 15 issue areas: access to benefits, children’s rights, disability rights, discrimination, domestic violence, due process, environmental justice, health care, homelessness, housing, Native American rights, prisoners’ rights, refugee and immigration rights, veterans’ rights, and voting rights.
Grants will be made only for attorney time charges and litigation expenses related to the specific case for which an organization is applying to be funded, and applications must be for a specific social justice legal case, including the filing of an appeal. Grants are not made for criminal cases, claim(s) for an individual(s) (unless the case is of significant precedential value beyond the interest of the individual), or an amicus brief.
The foundation will accept letters of intent until June 15, 2023. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full grant application by August 1, 2023.
To be eligible, applicants must be tax-exempt as defined by section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
Deadline: June 15, 2023 (Letters of Intent)
