News Brief: Educational Costs of Gun Violence

Gun violence and academic performance commonly contribute to elevated psychological stress, impairing adolescents’ learning ability. A new brief released by the Urban Institute highlights violence’s impact on educational outcomes in Washington, DC. The data compiled from eight DC wards showed that “both single-event and chronic exposure to gun violence adversely affect students beyond secondary education, hampering their college enrollment and potential for future earnings.” Furthermore, researchers concluded that neighborhoods disproportionately affected by gun violence face widening educational inequities and a decrease in academic support.
