Lesson Plan: Reducing Health Disparities in Black and Brown Communities During a Pandemic
Posted by The Pulitzer Center on June 23, 2020
Data on the pandemic’s impact on different racial groups is still emerging, and many health departments are still not releasing data on race. However, a pattern in the existing data is clear: Black and Latinx people are over-represented in the COVID-19 hospitalization and mortality statistics.
This lesson explores a Science Magazine interview with public health expert Sandra Crouse Quinn that delves into social determinants of health, the longstanding structural factors that make marginalized communities more vulnerable to health problems, and how they are impacting Black and brown communities during this pandemic.
Students will analyze data that reveal racial health disparities, trace these disparities to structural and historical causes, and draw on research to find solutions which could counteract racialized discrepancies in COVID-19’s impact on Black and brown people.
