Weiss Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship, UPenn

Posted by University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education on January 7, 2020

The Weiss Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with backgrounds in the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—into teaching in high-need Pennsylvania secondary schools. This Fellowship opportunity is open to students in Penn GSE’s Urban Teaching Apprenticeship Program.

At the heart of the Weiss Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellowship is a 10-month clinical component that brings Fellows into classrooms, with experienced mentors, for a full academic year. Each Fellow receives $32,000 from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation and a $10,000 merit-aid scholarship from Penn GSE to complete this master’s degree program, designed by Penn GSEPenn Engineering, and Penn’s School of Arts and Science. Fellows in this program enact practices that support student-centered, active learning and position learners in urban contexts as capable, curious, and creative.

Prospective teachers leave the program prepared to use the power of teaching to deepen student learning, transform schools, increase educational equity, and move into leadership roles. The program is guided by a commitment to diversity and equity; the use of inquiry to examine the forces that shape contexts for teaching and learning; and a focus on practice and partnership in preparing to teach in urban schools and communities. In return for the Fellowship, Fellows commit to teach for three years in high-need Philadelphia schools, with ongoing mentoring.

All Weiss Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellows will be affiliated with the School District of Philadelphia for their classroom preparation.
