Afterschool Play Captain Group Leader, Application Deadline Sept. 20
Posted by Fab Youth Philly on August 27, 2019
Join Fab Youth Philly’s team of Afterschool Super Heroes as a Play Captain Afterschool Group Leader. Fab Youth Philly is a values-driven organization that SUPPORTS youth-serving organizations, CONNECTS youth development professionals and INNOVATES original programming for children & teens. We are an organization that is working to apply a trauma informed lens to all of the work we do and working to dismantle and avoid perpetrating white-supremacist culture.
In Philadelphia every summer, there are over 500 streets designated as “Play Streets”, run by Parks & Recreation. The Play Streets are streets that are closed off to traffic where neighborhood children can receive a free meal and play together. To make those Play Streets more playful, in 2017, Fab Youth Philly created the Play Captain Initiative (www.playcaptains.com), which is a leadership and civic-engagement strategy designed to train and empower teens to make the Play Streets and neighborhoods of Philadelphia more playful. Those teens create and facilitate play activities on several Play Streets throughout Philadelphia as a five-week long summer job.
With support from Drexel University Promise Neighborhood, Fab Youth Philly expanded the Play Captain Initiative into an afterschool job and places the Play Captains at early childhood centers in the Promise Neighborhood of West Philadelphia in partnership with West Philadelphia Action for Early Learning. The Group Leader is responsible for supporting a team of 2-3 Play Captains at afterschool programs on Wednesdays and Thursdays, as well as assisting with weekly Professional Development on Tuesdays. The afterschool programs will be located in 3 centers located in the West Philly Promise Neighborhood (19104).
The Afterschool Play Captain Group Leader supports teams of Play Captains (up to 5 teens per center) at the Early Childhood Centers (up to 2 centers per Group Leader) to effectively do their job. They also help plan and/or participate in weekly professional development activities for the Play Captains.
This is a part-time position of up to 18 hours per week. Interested candidates MUST be available the following days and times: Tues, Wed & Thursdays 2:30-6pm. Fab Youth Philly provides paid time off for PT employees following a 90-day probationary period. There will be a period of paid training for the Group Leaders. All employees are required to produce fingerprinting/ child abuse and criminal background clearances. If hired, people will become employees of Fab Youth Philly. Previous experience working with teens in an afterschool job setting is required.
