Thousands of migrant children have been separated from their families at the US-Mexico border, creating a public health emergency with both immediate and long-term ramifications. Join the Center for Public Health Initiatives and CHOP PolicyLab as Dr. Colleen Kraft, immediate past president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, discusses the public health toll of this crisis. Dr. Kraft will address the trauma and toxic stress associated with family separation, the ongoing threats to the safety of unaccompanied minors, and the policy options available to address the health and social needs of traumatized children.

About Dr. Colleen Kraft

Colleen Kraft, MD, FAAP, is the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Kraft’s experience includes work in primary care pediatrics, pediatric education, and health care financing. Before becoming President of the AAP, Dr. Kraft was the Medical Director of the Health Network by Cincinnati Children’s, a Pediatric Population Health Initiative, until 2017. She was the Founding Pediatric Program Director at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. During her time as president of the AAP Virginia Chapter from 2006 to 2008, she was best known for working with the Legislature to improve Medicaid payment rates for pediatric services. She has been actively involved in pediatric engagement in school and child care for children with special health care needs. Her work in early childhood and population health seeks to translate the goals of health equity into medical practice.

Dr. Kraft is a graduate of the first Head Start class in 1965. She went on to receive her undergraduate degree at Virginia Tech, her M.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University and her MBA from the University of Cincinnati. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University.
