Temple University Work-Study Students needed for summer program staff

GEAR UP at Temple University will be running an on campus summer program and needs to hire 6 work study students (or volunteers), 5 as cohort leaders and 1 as a teacher. Both pay $10/hour and will run from the last week in June through the first week in August.

During the year, GEAR UP Temple students volunteer as tutors and mentors in North Philadelphia high schools. This summer program brings the high school students to campus for career exploration, job shadowing, and academic skills building. They will create podcasts about a variety of career fields with job placements on campus.

Those with math and/or Spanish or ESL backgrounds encouraged to apply. Only Temple work-study eligible students are able to apply for paid positions.

List Full Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provide academic support and instruction in targeted subjects to a summer camp session of 25 high school students during the five-week summer program. Targeted subjects include algebra, geometry, data analysis test and study skills, reasoning, college readiness, career readiness. Promote depth of understanding along with skill acquisition. Implement any established curriculum through tutoring or teaching.
• Work with GearUp staff in modifications to lesson plans, curriculum, and student supports. Compile and generate lesson materials on target subjects.
• Attend meetings and professional development activities as requested and scheduled. Attend training on academic enrichment provision and cultural competency to deliver high-quality support to youth participants.
• Create a safe and rich learning environment. Support community building through team-building and reflection activities.
• Document and assess student progress throughout the summer program. Provide feedback and support to students. Track attendance and assignment completion rates.

Qualifications

• A record of successful teaching or tutoring experience with students from socioeconomically diverse backgrounds.
• A strong mathematical background and/or math teaching experience. Experience with providing highly-engaging instruction in high school setting.
• Ability to assess student academic needs and adjust tutoring/teaching strategy when necessary.
• Ability to work collaboratively on a team.
• Exceptional interpersonal and problem-solving skills, with creative and positive energy for working with youth.
• Willing to incorporate daily activities that allows students to present, debate, and explore content that is relevant and inspires questioning.
• Strong or emerging leadership and communication skills.
• Excellent organizational and time management skills, with attention to detail, accuracy and punctuality.
• Commitment to and belief in all students’ ability to succeed and thrive. Commitment to social justice through educational equity.

Preferred

• Previous Philadelphia public school, college access or academic enrichment experience are also preferred.

Purpose of Role of the work-study position within Temple University

Temple University’s College of Education joins numerous partners in Philadelphia’s city-wide Gear Up Program. All partners share the objectives of helping children learn about college opportunities and supporting their preparation for access and success in post-secondary education. As a part of this initiative, Temple GearUp will hold a 5-week summer program for rising 10th and 11th graders from high schools in the North Philadelphia neighborhoods, focusing on academic enrichment, test prep, study skills, college exposure, and service to the community.

This work-study role will support the Gear Up Staff in the academic enrichment and test preparation component of the summer program.
