Project Planning for Nonprofit Organizations

Do you have a project to make happen? This workshop uses the example of planning a large Shakespearean production to help you understand how to handle the myriad details. You’ll learn how to organize, budget, and calendarize a project, and how to track all of these strands.

We’ll use Romeo and Juliet as our template. You might find it worthwhile to reread the play before the workshop, but it’s not required. If you have a copy of the play, please bring it!

In the course of the workshop, you’ll see samples of a cast breakdown (organizing the activities of a large number of people), a budget, and a timeline. You’ll leave with tools that will help you plan anything such as a campaign, an event, a season, a publication and more.

About the Presenter
As a consultant, Mitchell Krieger has done strategic planning, led board retreats, done development audits, written grants and taught workshops. A prolific writer, he is the author of numerous recording notes and program articles.

Mr. Krieger’s career as an administrator began at Michigan Opera Theatre in 1990, as Artistic Administrator for MOT, Opera Pacific, and Dayton Opera. In 1998 he became full-time Director of Operations for Opera Pacific. As one of the leaders of Opera Pacific’s renaissance, he produced several acclaimed new productions of, among others, Carmen, Salome, and Dead Man Walking.

He then served as Managing Director of George Street Playhouse. In partnership with Artistic Director David Saint, Mr. Krieger produced critically acclaimed productions including a number of world premieres. GSP’s educational programs more than doubled during Mr. Krieger’s tenure.

Mr. Krieger was Executive Director of the Victoria Symphony from January 2009 through June 2016, where his many achievements included building the Symphony’s endowment from under $3 million to over $8 million; increasing annual giving by 300%; and growing the Symphony’s educational programs significantly. For the 2015/2016 75th Anniversary season, Mr. Krieger enticed Yo-Yo Ma and Yannick Nézet-Séguin to perform with the Symphony, and arranged the Victoria Symphony’s first-ever tour to the major cities of Eastern Canada.
