Preschool Pays Off for Two Generations

National study shows pre-K has two-generation impact
A new study from Nobel Laureate and University of Chicago economist James Heckman finds that high-quality early education programs can not only make a short-term difference in children’s lives, but also yield a big payoff later in life—and can benefit their parents.
Analysis of two government-funded early childhood programs serving disadvantaged kids from birth to age five found that, for every dollar spent on these programs, there was a return of more than six dollars. Additionally, high-quality early childhood programs can enable mothers to continue their education and enter (or re-enter) the workforce.
