Getting In: Examining Equity in Public High School Admissions
Every year, Philadelphia’s newly-minted eighth graders enter into a complex system of high school applications and selections – one that closely mirrors a college admissions process. There are applications to submit, brochures to examine, and admissions criteria, timelines and due dates to meet. There is even a citywide high school fair at which families can learn more about the options.
And, speaking of options, there are a lot of options. There are neighborhood, magnet, citywide admission, and charter schools. And, there are specialized programs, such as International Baccalaureate, performing arts and career and technical education or innovative instructional models such as competency-based, inquiry-based, and project-based.
As the School District of Philadelphia continues to innovate new models and expand its inventory of high schools,
it merits asking whether or not Philadelphia’s complex process of high school selection is actually limiting access to the most selective options for Philadelphia’s most vulnerable students.
This month, we ask:
Who is getting in? Who is being left out? And, why?
