Middle School Leader Teacher, Sunrise of Philadelphia

DESCRIPTION:
The Middle School Leader Teacher is responsible for developing and ensuring high quality summer activities in accordance with all grant requirements and the strategic goals defined by Sunrise. The Middle School Lead Teacher will work with Group Leaders to design and lead hands-on, project-based activities that help middle school students build 21st century skills, explore potential careers of interest, and learn more about college. This is a part-time, seasonal position (20 – 30 hours/week) that reports directly to the Program Quality Director. All employees are required to submit up-to-date background clearances and health assessments before they can begin working with young people.
OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design and lead hands-on summer camp activities for middle school students in a project-based format; incorporate youth voice and choice in all program activities
• Ensure completion and submission of required project planning forms, youth project grading rubrics, and student debriefing forms as outlined by grant requirements
• Support group leaders in implementing activities
• Work with group leaders to manage student participation and behavior, using positive behavior tactics to get students engaged and actively participating
• Work with group leaders to create a positive class environment and provide personalized support to students
• Practice open communication with staff and instructors to ensure successful implementation of program activities
• Provide data and reports as needed; work with staff to ensure tracking and reporting of student progress and outcomes
• Communicate with caregivers and family members when needed regarding student behaviors, both positive and negative
REQUIREMENTS:
-Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Psychology, Child Development, Human Services, or a related field. Can also be actively pursuing Bachelor’s degree, as long as you have significant experience working with young people.
-A minimum of 2-years’ experience working with middle school students in a community, afterschool/summer camp, or school setting
-Knowledge of and experience with project/problem-based learning, service learning, and/or experiential learning
-Demonstrated experience coordinating, planning, and implementing hands-on activities with middle school students
-Enthusiasm for helping middle school students become better at communicating, team work, problem solving, and being creative
-Enthusiasm for helping middle school students explore their future career options and learning more about going to college
-Demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication to improving the lives of youth and families
-Able to work independently and as part of a team
-Friendly, courteous manner; positive communication skills
-Dependable and reliable
