The Philadelphia Regional Noyce Partnership and the Philadelphia Ed Fund
will host the
Don McKinney STEM Conference:
A Philadelphia STEM Ecosystem Community-based Learning Day
Saturday, June 10, 2017 ~ 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
Presenters in Secondary Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Environmental and Earth Science are welcome to submit a workshop proposal
The Philadelphia Regional Noyce Partnership and the Philadelphia Ed Fund are reaching out to educators, master teachers, faculty at institutions of higher education, and STEM educational organizations in the region for presenters of workshops for this Phila. STEM Ecosystem Community-based Learning Day. It is expected that teachers and STEM Ecosystem Stakeholders who attend this professional development event will be able to use what they learn to become better at implementing community-based learning experiences that focus on increasing students’ ability to use engineering design and modeling, construct explanations and design solutions, and use abstract and quantitative thinking as they solve problems in their local community. Each workshop should be designed to include STEM resources in the wider Philadelphia community.
Details:
- Workshops will be 90 minutes long.
- Presenters will receive a stipend of $150.00
- Deadline for proposals is May 5, 2017
- Complete the Workshop Proposal Form
- Please submit your workshop proposal on the attached form by May 5, 2017 to Bonnie Hallam, PRNP Program Coordinator ([email protected]).
- You will be notified of your proposal’s acceptance by May 8, 2017.
Vision for Workshops:
Please see the Framework (email Bonnie) and pay particular attention to the Example of a Community-based Learning Lesson. We will have two Workshop Sessions.
- Session I: This session will bring teachers and STEM stakeholders together who work in or are interested in solving a problem that particularly impacts a geographical section of Philadelphia. Workshops in this Session must have a problem specific to one of the geographic areas mentioned on the Proposal form.
- Session II: This session will bring teachers and STEM stakeholders together who are interested in a solving a problem that they are interested in. Workshop Presenters are asked to review the Green Works and GreenFutures documents that are attached to get an idea of the kinds of problems that people in the Philadelphia region are facing. Sample lessons are also attached to help presenters understand what we are looking for in an excellent workshop.
