Suicide in Schools: From Assessment to Postvention with Dr. Erbacher

Workshop Description
Working with youth who have experienced traumatic suicide loss can present as a professional challenge for many. Recent research suggests that a person dies by suicide every 14 minutes and for every loss, there are at least six close loved ones left behind who are questioning and grieving this loss. Clinicians attending this workshop will gain an understanding of the complex grief process teens and adolescents face with regard to suicide loss as well as factors that can further complicate this trauma and grief. In this workshop, practitioners will learn practical strategies for both immediate postvention response and long-term recovery. This workshop will include approaches for working effectively with schools to respond appropriately including what to do with the empty desk, establishing memorials, the risk of contagion, etc. Finally, individual and group counseling techniques as well as suggestions for families will be discussed. You will leave this workshop with many specific strategies and activities that you can implement immediately! This seminar will conclude with a comprehensive discussion of case studies in addition to strategies to prevent burnout when doing this challenging work.

- Apply skills to manage your own reactions to a suicidal client and build a therapeutic alliance

- Employ practical strategies in treatment planning for suicidal clients
- Relate concepts learned to actual case studies
