Spring Instructor – Creating My Vision for College Success

About Philadelphia Futures:
Philadelphia Futures provides low-income, first-generation-to-college students with the tools, resources, and opportunities necessary for admission to and success in college. Our direct service programs, Sponsor-A-Scholar (SAS) and College Connection, provide academic enrichment, college guidance, and a range of other services for promising high school students attending Philadelphia’s public, charter, and parochial high schools.

Instructor – Creating My Vision for College Success Course for High School Sophomores

The Creating My Vision Instructor will teach three sections of approximately 15 students each in an intensive course designed to build academic skills and enhance understanding of the college application process. In general terms, the course balances instruction around reading and writing with instruction around how to most effectively apply to college. As such, the instructor is responsible for all reading and writing instruction and assessment (teaching from a previously created curriculum), and the College Guidance staff at Philadelphia Futures will collaboratively teach the elements of the course that focus on the college admissions process. Students read biographies about college journeys, envision a college journey for themselves, and complete an entire mock college application process, including the application, essays and an interview. The course will be held three afternoons a week from 4:00pm-5:15pm in Center City Philadelphia throughout the spring term (exact location and dates TBD). Responsibilities include: (1) collaborating with Philadelphia Futures curriculum and academic specialists to implement lessons designed to support preparation for college admission; (2) reporting daily on student attendance, assignment completion, and progress; (3) grading and evaluating student work, including but not limited to submitting mid-semester and final term reports.

Qualifications for Instructional Positions: Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred. Three-five years relevant teaching experience (preferably teaching high school level); demonstrated commitment to the education of Philadelphia public high school students and a clear understanding of related challenges; a teaching style that is structured, positive, and engaging; strong communication and organizational skills; FBI and Child Abuse Clearances if hired.

Dates: Week of January 16th, 2017 through May 15th, 2017– weekday afternoons from 4:00-5:15pm.

Compensation: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.
