What: Fighting Back: Defending the LGBT Mind and Body in Pennsylvania, a two day history conference open to the public
Where: The Historical Society of Pennsylvania (1300 Locust Street, Philadelphia, PA, 19107) & William Way LGBT Center (1315 Spruce St, Philadelphia, PA 19107).
When: Sunday, October, 18th, & Monday, October 19th.
In collaboration with the William Way LGBT Center, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania (HSP) is hosting Fighting Back: Defending the LGBT Mind and Body in Pennsylvania, a two-day history conference exploring the gay community’s response to the AIDS outbreak and homosexuality’s stigma as a mental illness in the 1970’s and 1980’s.
As part of the city-wide celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Annual Reminder Day demonstrations for gay rights, Fighting Back will take place on October 18-19. Focusing on health activism, the conference will feature:
• W. Wilson Goode, Mayor, City of Philadelphia, 1984-1992
• David Fair, First Director of the AIDS Activity Coordinating Office
• Psychiatrist Jack Drescher, member of the World Health Organization’s Working Group on the Classification of Sexual Disorders and Sexual Health
• Darlene Garner, Mayor’s Liaison to the LGBT Community, 1984-88
• David Acosta, Activist and Founder of GALAEI
• Lance Wahlert, Director, Project on Bioethics, Sexuality, and Gender Identity, University of Pennsylvania
• Heshie Zinman, Founder of the AIDS Library, and many more.
Fighting Back is open to the public. The conference is free for members of HSP and William Way; $15 for students with a valid ID; $30 general registration.
Fighting Back is made possible through the support of the American Psychiatric Association, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, Mr. David Fair, Mr. Mel Heifetz, the Public Health Fund of the Public Health Management Corporation, and the William Way LGBT Center.
