PARKWAY NW WALK FOR PEACE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE, PEACE DAY PHILLY
September 21, 2015 is United Nations The International Day of Peace. On that day, all Parkway NW students will be joined by parents, collaborating organizations – including Peace Day Philly, the local initiative for this global day – and concerned citizens for a Peace March in Mt. Airy. Students will march with peace signs as well as T-Shirts with the names of those who have been lost to violence in Philadelphia.
Wayne Ellington, professional basketball player and Philly native, will march with the students and speak at the gathering at the end of the march. Ellington’s father was tragically shot and killed last November in Philadelphia.
The march will be followed by a workshop series at the Lutheran Theological Seminary. The interactive workshops, based upon topics the students chose as important to them, will address elements of peace and social justice on personal, local and global levels. Parkway students will lead some of the workshops; others will be lead by International Day of Peace project partners.
All are invited to join the Parkway Northwest High School on the March; workshop seating in the Theological Seminary will prioritize students and parents due to space constraints.
Those who wish to walk for peace and social justice should meet at 9:45AM in the Mt. Airy Playground located between Sedgwick St. and Mt. Pleasant Ave. on Germantown Ave. The three-block walk will begin promptly at 10:00AM. It will end at Allen’s Lane and Germantown Avenue at the Lutheran Theological Seminary.
Parkway Northwest High School for Peace and Social Justice is celebrating its 10-year anniversary. Parkway’s mission is to prepare students to face a complex world with the skills necessary to institute positive change locally and globally. Parkway NW offers a rigorous college preparatory program designed to promote peace and social justice through the use of critical thinking, problem solving, cooperative learning and research.
Principal Steiner states: “The Peace Walk will be an amazing way to start the new school year and to celebrate 10 years of promoting peace and striving to create social justice in all areas of life.”
