What U.S. Cities Have Learned About Building and Sustaining Afterschool Efforts

More than a decade after a handful of U.S. cities pioneered efforts to enroll more low-income children in high-quality afterschool programs through coordination of services and agencies, a new report highlights lessons-learned from this effort to build “afterschool systems.” The new report from The Wallace Foundation, Growing Together, Learning Together: What Cities Have Discovered About Building Afterschool Systems, focuses on the four elements that current evidence suggests are essential to a successful system: strong leadership from major players, coordination that fits the local context, effective use of data, and a comprehensive approach to quality. The report concludes with a look at areas of emerging interest, such as the link between afterschool and social-emotional learning.
