Promise Zone Volunteer Directors, RSVP Philadelphia
Posted by RSVP Philadelphia on July 6, 2015
RSVP Philadelphia has recently had a grant renewed by the Corporation of National and Community Service to expand opportunities and recruit volunteers to improve services in the Promise Zone – roughly two square miles in West Philadelphia –bounded by the Schuylkill River to the east, Girard Avenue to the north, 48th Street to the west, and Sansom Street to the south. It includes 35,315 residents with an overall poverty rate of 50.78%, nearly double the city’s rate of 26.9%.
The grant has enabled us to hire 2 staff to partner and engage in the community, utilizing existing RSVP work plans and models to expand social work programs and improve educational opportunities and opportunities around senior hunger.
We have had a great staff that made major inroads in community outreach and development of volunteer opportunities that can greatly benefit the neighborhood. Unfortunately for our department, these excellent people are moving on to other opportunities, and I will need to fill their positions.
