Philadelphia to be part of Safety and Justice Challenge

The City of Philadelphia won MacArthur Foundation Support to Reduce Use of Jails

Congratulations to the Department of Public Safety and all those involved in the City of Philadelphia becoming one of 20 jurisdictions across the country selected to receive a $150,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to create a more fair and effective local justice system. The grant is a part of the Safety and Justice Challenge, the Foundation’s $75 million initiative to reduce incarceration rates by changing the way America thinks about and uses jails. The City of Philadelphia will use the funding to enhance programs with the Philadelphia Prison System that reduce jail time and recidivism.

This opportunity, along on-going efforts around Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI), Disproportionate Minority Contact, and our work to improve outcomes for our juvenile population through the National League of Cities, Municipal Leadership for Juvenile Justice Reform Technical Assistance Initiative, are all complementary in our pursuit of reaching the Mayor’s goal of a safer city.
