Character Building, Social Emotional Learning, and Educational Equity
Research across multiple fields have identified character building and social emotional learning, SEL, as an important strategy in improving motivation in school, promoting school success, closing the achievement gap, and success in work and life. But not all young people, particularly low-income youth of color, have equal access to character building and SEL opportunities.
Afterschool and summer programs are perfectly positioned to promote young people’s social and emotional skills. These skills are also part of the 21st Century Learning Skills. They are associated with non-cognitive skills and the development of “grit” and a “growth mindset”.
This conference will focus on the research and practice of these things, with an eye on ensuring that all young people have equal access to these learning opportunities.
