Consumers Guide for Science After School
This project is part of the Coalition for Science After School which consists of thirty science education, afterschool, research, and advocacy organizations that have come together to promote science in afterschool programs as a way to provide academic enrichment, youth development, and fun. With support from the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning at the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory, we’re preparing a Consumer’s Guide for Science After School. The Consumers Guide is designed to resemble the Zagats Restaurant guides in that frequent users are asked to recommend relevant materials that they think are working well in the afterschool hours. Once nominations are collected, reviewers from the science education sphere and after school experts will review all nominated materials and/or programs and select those that best combine science materials and the after school setting for recognition on a national website. These will be publicized in the Consumers Guide for Science After School so that after school sites from around the country can learn about and use them to promote outstanding science activities after school.
Anyone can nominate a program-instructors, students, program leaders, parents, science educators-and say why they find it engaging and worthwhile by logging on to the website, at http://tepd.ucop.edu/scienceguide. After a short registration, you can complete a 10 minute nomination process that describes an outstanding science program that you have participated in, seen or used in an after school setting (Be sure to hit ‘send’ after completing your nomination!). Please encourage your colleagues, instructors, and kids to nominate programs they think fit the bill.
