Congreso de Latinos Unidos is a North Philadelphia community based organization that services the Latino community through education, health, leadership development and advocacy. Congreso?s Children & Youth Services Division (CYS) services students in elementary school until high school through after school programs that offer life skills education, work readiness, supported employment, community service, arts & humanities and leadership development.
CYS currently has a number of volunteer and employment opportunities available for college students throughout the academic year. We also highly encourage students looking for service learning opportunities to consider these possibilities. In addition, we have a Freedom School Summer Internship where staff implement a literacy and social action curriculum for elementary and middle school students across Philadelphia.

Children and Youth Services
Vacancy List February 2007
PT Certified Teacher (Academic) – Needed to work with after school program staff to coach staff on effective teaching and literacy instruction practices in the after school setting. Responsibilities include training staff, doing classroom observations and feedback session, modeling best practices, reviewing lesson plans, etc. Pennsylvania subject-area certification preferred but certification from other states will be considered.
After School Program Activity Leaders – Activity leaders needed to oversee groups of elementary school children in after school programs. Responsibilities include supervising youth, providing tutoring and literacy instruction, and running an enrichment activity. Preferred areas for enrichment activity include art, dance, music performance, percussion, sports leagues, service learning, and life skills. Minimum of two years experience with youth. High school degree required but some college preferred.
Freedom School Summer Interns- Enthusiastic and creative people needed to work in our summer programs supervising elementary and middle school students. This position entails giving instruction to groups of 10 elementary and middle students on topics ranging from literacy and math to recreation to creative arts, as well as the supervision of our Junior Servant Leaders, the high school students who work in the program. The program runs for 6 weeks with an additional 2 weeks of training. Requirements include:
? Undergraduate/Graduate Students must have completed at least one full year of college
? Experience working with children, strong commitment to working with children
? Must be able to attend all trainings including training in Maryland May 23-30th, 2007 (dates subject to change).
Part-time Futuros Tutoring Program Coordinator- The education/tutoring specialist will staff the drop-in tutoring center, train and supervise volunteers, assess students? skills, develop individual work plans with students and (as needed) provide one-on-one tutoring.
Requirements:
? Bachelor?s Degree required.
? Experience providing direct services to teenagers required.
? Experience working with at-risk youth and tutoring preferred.
? Teaching certification preferred.
? Knowledge of the Puerto Rican/Latino and North Philadelphia community and its dynamics.
? Bilingual (English/ Spanish) preferred.
? Willingness to work a flexible schedule (some nights and weekends).
UMAD Assistant Coordinator- The UMAD Assistant will assist in the development of the United Minorities Achieving Dreams {UMAD leadership program for high school-aged youth. The program seeks to foster leadership development through academic expectations, subject based knowledge, research based projects, interactions with community and business leaders, and the opportunity to give back to community by performing service activities.
Requirements:
? Bachelor?s Degree or some college preferred.
? 1-3 years of facilitation or teaching Skills.
? 2 years experience providing direct services to teenagers required.
? Experience working with at-risk youth preferred.
? Knowledge of the Puerto Rican/Latino and North Philadelphia community and its dynamics.
? Proven organizational and lesson planning skills.
? Driver?s License preferred
? Working knowledge of Microsoft, Excel, and Powerpoint.
? Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
? Willingness to work on a flexible schedule (some nights and weekends).
Freedom School Academic Advisors- Academic Advisors prepare the Summer Freedom School curriculum derived from the assigned text, plan service learning project timelines and provide academic guidance to Junior Servant Leaders (high school students) in the pursuit of their service learning and/or elective credit during the Freedom School Day on site and at Wednesday Academies. Academic Advisors supervise and evaluate the performance of the Junior Servant Leaders and Servant Leader Interns (college students) in their classrooms. Academic Advisors also participate in the Senior Staff duties on their sites including support of the overall site, conflict resolution among staff and event planning.
MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
 BA or BS in education or a related field
 Must have a willingness to work constructively with youth ages 14 – 30
 Must participate in Philadelphia Freedom School sponsored training
 Good verbal & written communication skills
