The Pennsylvania Service Learning Alliance is hiring for VISTA positions, starting in September and November. Following are brief descriptions of the sites. PSLA VISTA positions 2003-2004

1. Turner Middle School Youth-Driven Service-Learning Center
Work with middle school students at this site in west philadelphia, helping to make community connections and broaden the reach of service-learning in the school and beyond. Special focus on technology, environmental and anti-violence issues.

2. University City High School Youth-Driven Service-Learning Center
Work with high school students and teachers at this school, located near the University of Pennsylvania, around issues of ecology, nutrition, and technology. The students are involved in a variety of exciting service-learning projects, including working with the nearby elementary school, operating a farmer’s market, and developing web sites and "ezines."

3. Gratz High School Youth-Driven Service-Learning Center
Work with high school students and teachers at this urban school, located in North Philadelphia. The students run the service-learning center, helping to educate their peers, teachers, and community members about service. The students connect ideas and visions with people power. Special projects include arts in the community, computer refurbishing, and anti-bullying.

4. Urban Technology Project
The Urban Technology Project empowers Philadelphia youth to improve their community and themselves through meaningful educational experiences with technology. UrbanTech challenges participants to analyze critically the nature and implications of the "digital divide" for racial and ethnic minorities, and to become active leaders in democratizing access to technology in diverse urban communities.

5. PA Service-Learning Alliance: Outreach Coordinator
The Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance works with teachers, students, and schools in eastern Pennsylvania helping them to engage in service-learning. PSLA leads workshops and retreats for teachers and students and connects schools with funding from the state department of education. PSLA is involved with a variety of exciting initiatives in special education, digital divide, and character education.

6. UPenn Center for Community Partnerships: Health Promotion Coordinator
Sayre Middle School’s Community School Health Promotion and Dease Prevention program is designed to help the school and community develop health partnerships and promote healthy lifestyles. Activities include a student-run community fruit stand, health and nutrition lesson plans, health and dental screenings, and health awareness events. The school is located in West Philadelphia and has a strong partnership with the University of Pennsylvania.

7. UPenn Center for Community Partnerships: Digital Divide Program
University of Pennsylvania’s Digital Divide Program works to improve the quality of life in West Philadelphia through technology access and education. Digital Divide coordinates computer literacy classes for children and adults, with volunteers teaching over 200 community members technology skills. Additionally, the program runs The Shop, a space where Penn students receive donated computers and refurbish them to distribute throughout the community.

8. Americorps*VISTA leader at YouthBuild Charter School
The VISTA leader will work to coordinate efforts among Americorps members in the Philadelphia region. This includes providing opportunities for corps members to meet regularly, share information online, attend professional development workshops, and participate in service events together.

9. United Way Martin Luther King Day of Service
The Philadelphia community celebrate Dr. King’s legacy by participating through citizen action in the largest collaboration of Martin Luther King Day of Service activities in the nation. Through the MLK Day of Service, citizens are placed in the community to help paint a school, renovate a house or recreation center, become a reading coach and read to children, and teach computer skills to senior citizens. Folks are also encouraged to identify a community need and create a project of their own.
