Dodge Foundation Invites Applications for New Jersey Animal Assistance Program

The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation established the New Jersey Animal Assistance Program to help alleviate animal suffering and to establish New Jersey as a leader in the humane care of companion animals.

The program makes grants to organizations that address the issue of companion animal overpopulation, supply a temporary and safe haven for animals, and nurture the human-animal bond.

Organizations may apply within one or more of the following programmatic areas.

1. Capacity-Building for Humane Organizations: Funding to improve the care and humane treatment of companion animals by improving the internal operations of animal shelters. The foundation provides technical support and professional guidance to shelters that want to act on a recognized need to undertake such work. Such shelters (Partners) will collaborate with mentoring shelters or organizations (Mentors) to determine the Partner shelter’s needs and to design and implement a comprehensive strategic plan to address those needs.

Based on new proposal requests, the foundation will offer a second year of funding in 2005 to 2004 recipients of funds in this area. Mentors may be eligible for grants up to $50,000, and Partners may receive grant awards up to $25,000. The foundation will also consider a few new applications from Partner shelters that either did not receive awards or did not apply last year.

2. Feral Cat Initiative & Developing or Expanding Spay/ Neuter Programs: Grants to organizations for a coordinated municipal, regional, or county-wide approach to managing feral and stray cat populations. Health departments and animal control officers as well as available low-cost spay/neuter facilities must be included in the plans. The foundation will also consider applications to develop or expand community low-cost spay/neuter programs and existing low-cost spay/neuter facilities. (Request range: $10,000 – $50,000)

3. Rehabilitation Facilities: Applicants under this category must be shelter/rehabilitation facilities for orphaned or injured New Jersey wildlife, or for the rescue of domestic/companion animals that are neither dogs nor cats (e.g., horses, reptiles, amphibians, parrots, etc.). (Request Range: $5,000 – $15,000)

4. Capital Campaigns: Limited funding is available to expand or renovate an existing facility. This category is very competitive and will be limited to a few organizations, either nonprofit or government entities. (Request Range: $15,000 – $50,000)
