2003 INNER CITY GRANT APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Inner city areas are defined as the usually older and more densely populated residential section of a city (more than 1,000 persons per square mile) in which low income and minority groups predominate. The main purpose of the Inner City Grant is to foster stewardship of trees and the environment and partnerships by bringing together resource experts with volunteers and others who care about trees and their inner city communities. Planting trees in your community is a great opportunity to bring people together. The Inner City Grant will support education and training opportunities of the general public and professionals, grassroots tree planting projects, and partnerships at the local level. If your organization’s projects or programs bring these elements together, we urge you to apply.

2003 Applications and Program Organization
The USDA Forest Service Inner City Program, directed by the Pennsylvania Urban and Community Forestry Council, in cooperation with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Bureau of Forestry and The Pennsylvania State University School of Forest Resources will accept grant applications through October 15, 2003. Grants are available to municipalities or volunteer groups for urban and community forestry projects. Consideration will be given to any group(s) supporting ongoing partnerships at the local level in the interest of caring for and learning about trees in their communities. Organizations could join together to form a partnership. Partners can be between groups from the same neighborhood, adjacent neighborhoods or elsewhere. A Review Committee consisting of the five Extension Urban Foresters, the PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry Urban Forestry Coordinator, and additional members of the PA Urban and Community Forestry Council provides oversight and proposal review. A locally-based Extension Urban Forester will provide technical assistance and evaluation of grant projects.

TO APPLY: Send one original and one copy of the application to the appropriate Extension Urban Forester. Applications not postmarked by October 15, 2003 will not be considered during this round.
