FEDERAL REGISTER LISTS FUNDING OPPORTUNITY FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. DAY
The June 18th Federal Register contained a notice of funding opportunity for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Subject to the availability of appropriations, the Corporation for National and Community Service intends to award grant funds of $2,500 to $7,500, to pay for the federal share of the cost of planning and carrying out service opportunities in conjunction with the federal legal holiday honoring the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 20, 2003. The purpose of these grants are to mobilize more Americans to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday as a day of service in communities and to bring people together around the common focus of service to others. This is a great opportunity to develop projects in response to President Bush’s Call to Service asking all Americans to perform 4000 hours-the equivalent of two years-of community service to the nation over their lifetime. It also provides an opportunity for the national service family to reach out to faith- and small community-based organizations to collaborate on this day of service.
