River to River Teacher Institute
Sponsored in part by the Corporation for National Service

July 20th ? 22nd 2004

Delaware Valley Earth Force, Philadelphia Water Department, and the Independence Seaport Museum are proud to present a three day institute for educators. This institute is designed to give teachers new tools to engage students in historical inquiry as the springboard to environmental service-learning projects. Using the Earth Force model of community action and problem solving (CAPS), teachers can earn Act 48 credits while examining and implementing new ways to help their students explore:

  • Philadelphia?s cultural, economic, political, and chronological history
  • How past events affect present environmental conditions
  • How local environmental challenges have been addressed in the past
  • How historical context can help them to effectively address today?s environmental problems
  • How to perform water quality testing and monitoring

Our exploration of Philadelphia?s water history will take us to:

  • Independence Seaport Museum for a walking tour of Dock Street and a boat trip on the Delaware
  • Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center
  • John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum

Join us for three days of adventure and learning. Space is limited so call Megan or Sheri today at 215/884-9888 for an application. We look forward to hearing from you!
