    Interdisciplinary Seminar in
    Communitybased Arts
    Art Education 251

    Wednesdays, 1 3:30pm
    Ritter Hall Room 200, Main Campus, Temple University
    Instructor: Dr. Billy Yalowitz

    Community-based Arts brings artists together with people of a community of location, spirit, or tradition, to create art that is based in the life of that community. In this course students will

  • Gain exposure to established Community-based Arts projects in Philadelphia, through field trips and guest speakers
  • Become familiar with different discipline-based facets of Community Arts
  • Learn about the history and theory of Community Arts
  • Think critically about the issues of race, class, and aesthetics inherent in Community Arts practice

    The course will also prepare students to become involved in the growing number of field internships in Community Arts that are being offered at Temple. Faculty from several Temple departments and guest speakers from key community-based arts programs in Philadelphia will teach on topics including

  • Community-based Performance
  • Architecture and Community Design
  • Sculpture and Public Art
  • Community-based Media
  • The Big Picture Philadelphia’s Mural Arts Program
  • Community-based Writing and Publishing
