Delco Literacy seeks volunteers
The Delaware County Literacy Council is asking adults in Delaware County to make a New Year’s resolution that will keep on giving in 2013 and beyond. Instead of a traditional resolution like losing weight or getting organized, DCLC suggests resolving to help someone learn to read or to speak English.
Becoming a volunteer tutor for the Literacy Council offers wonderful personal rewards and strengthens the entire community.
Currently, there are an estimated 35,000 adults in Delaware County who cannot read well, including immigrants who do not speak English. Since 1975, DCLC has been providing free literacy services to local adults who wish to improve their reading, writing, math or English-speaking skills. For these adults, improved literacy is the first step toward exercising more control over their own lives.
Volunteer tutors for the Literacy Council meet with an adult student in a mutually agreed-upon location, such as a public library, twice a week for 1-1/2 hours each time. Training and materials are provided. DCLC will offer free tutor training for new volunteers on Monday and Wednesday evenings, February 4, 6, 11, and 13, 6:30 to 9:00pm at the Literacy Council, 2217 Providence Avenue in Chester. Attendance at all sessions and pre-registration are required.
