Literacy commission supports adult learning
The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy is inviting local organizations to help create neighborhood adult learning communities, by funding up to five partnerships, each at $30,000.
The partnerships will conduct adult workforce literacy activities, including recruiting resident adult learners, tutors who live or work in the neighborhood, and peer mentors who are succeeding in adult basic education programs.
Each partnership will also use contract funds to offer workforce literacy courses in ABE, GED or ESL during the contracted period, participate in professional development and capacity building activities provided by The Mayor’s Commission on Literacy, and prepare a twelve-month plan for the period of July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013.
Successful applicants may be eligible to apply for continuing support from the Mayor’s Commission on Literacy and possible matching funds from the State Department of Education to support their work after July 1, 2012.
